Teeth cleaning, dental hygiene examinations and general dentistry
At The Smile Practice in Oxford and Didcot, you and your family can enjoy a full range of general dentistry services and regular hygiene treatments to look after the long-term health of your teeth.
We firmly believe in the motto, ‘prevention is better than cure’ and are committed to providing you with excellent standards of preventative and general dental care.
It is important to attend regular dental examinations so we can identify and treat developing conditions early on and keep an eye on your general oral health. During routine check-ups we will conduct a thorough examination of your mouth and carry out oral cancer screening as standard.
We recognise that it is extremely important to detect conditions and administer treatment early and advise that you attend a routine check-up every 3-6 months. This enables us to catch conditions early and treat them before you develop further symptoms.
It will also save you suffering with tooth pain and discomfort and save you paying for complex treatment in the future.

What to expect during a dental examination?
During a general dental check-up, your dentist at The Smile Practice will:
- Ask about patient’s general health, how their teeth have been since their last visit and if they are on any new medications
- Examine the patient’s mouth, paying close attention to the teeth and gums
- Carry out any necessary treatments that do not take further consultation or an extended period such as a quick cleaning. The dentist may also conduct tests or X-rays if required
- Ask further questions about lifestyle in terms of diet, alcohol consumption, smoking habits and mouth care routine
- Inform the patient of when they should next visit the dentist, usually between 3 months to two years depending on the patient’s needs
Even patients who follow best practices such as cleaning and flossing should visit the dentist regularly.
The dentist will be able to check general health of the patient’s teeth but also monitor for early signs of potentially serious conditions such as tooth decay, gum disease and oral cancer.
How long should a dental exam take?
Dental exams usually comprise a check of oral health and a cleaning. The dentist may also check for warning signs of larger problems. It can take 45-60 mins for the dentist to undertake these checks and treatments.

Dental hygienist review via Google
“I have started to have treatments done by Dr J Dhillon at Smile Practice in 2020, soon after the first lockdown and I was pleased they were able to see me and help me with a tooth extraction. Then I had also a crown fitted recently, I liked their professionalism and also that they are happy to let you know the details of the treatment and answer you any questions you might have.
Also, really liked the hygienist and pleased with their advice of improving the oral hygiene. Thank you!”
